It comes from his ‘Y’line collection of Autumn/Winter1955. Dior harboured hopes of becoming an architect earlier in his life and subsequently referred to his garments as ‘ephemeral architecture’. He named each of his collections after a ‘line’ to emphasize the silhouette. A number of the garments in the ‘Y’ line collection evoked an inverted Y shape in the skirt details, created through means of pleating or, in this case, the lines of the bow which fall from the waist.\r\nThe dress is a strong example of the quintessential Dior ‘New Look’ silhouette, with its nipped-in waist and full skirt.
