It is one of 96 similar objects, most of which are facsimiles of original miniatures in various collections, both public and private. These copies were created for J J Foster to illustrate his publication of ‘Miniature Painters, British and Foreign…’ 1903. This collection of copies was exhibited in 1908 at Dickenson’s Gallery, London, which was owned by J J Foster. It was accompanied by a booklet ‘Exhibition Illustrating the Art of Miniature Painting’, 1908. Both publications are available in the National Art Library, V&A. \r\n\r\nIn the exhibition booklet this object is listed on page 4 as No. 7 in Case F. 'Mary Queen of Scots. After Hilliard.'\nOriginal owner cited as H.M. The King.\rThe catalogue is incorrect in identifying this version as the one in the Royal Collection. This version of Hilliard's Mary Queen of Scots is actually now in the V&A, P.24-1975, with its distinctive inscription 'MARIA Regina Scotia' on a vellum backing added in the 17th century.
