On this black satin dress, three buttons in the shape of five-petalled flowers, made from padded pink silk and outlined in strips of black satin, were specially designed to complement the delicate floral embroidery pattern and colour of the fabric. \r\nThe garment was made by GUO XU, a Shanghai-based brand specialising in bespoke qipao. Founded by Guo Yujin (b. 1970) and Xu Yulin (b. 1973) in 2002, the company's designs combine modern fashion silhouettes with traditional Chinese embroideries. Unlike other qipao, which are cut on the grainline, this dress is cut on the bias (at a 45° angle), allowing the fabric to hang more gracefully on the body.\r\nThe floral design was inspired by the story of the ‘Heavenly Maiden Scattering Flowers,’ from the Buddhist Vimalakirti Sutra. The birth of the Buddha was also said to be accompanied by a rain of flowers. The design was crafted by GUO XU’s in-house embroiderers in the style of Suzhou embroidery, characterised by naturalistic and soft colours. Here, the designers opted for more monochromatic tones and pastel colours to evoke a sense of grace and femininity. \r\n","physicalDescription":"Dress for a woman (qipao) made of black satin-weave silk and silk organza, embroidered with floral pattern in coloured silks.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Guo, Yujun","id":"AUTH354077"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Xu, Yulin","id":"AUTH354078"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"GUO XU","id":"AUTH354055"},"association":{"text":"made for","id":"x30791"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Satin-weave silk and organza; embroidery in silk threads","categories":[{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2021NA5653","2021NA5652","2021NA5654","2021NA5655"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"ARAIL","id":"THES394906"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"woman's dress","id":""}],[{"text":"qipao","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Shanghai","id":"x29883"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2019","earliest":"2019-01-01","latest":"2019-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by GUO XU","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"132.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"nape to hem","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"collar","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Dress for a woman (qipao), satin-weave silk; silk organza; embroidery in silk threads, designed by Guo Yujun and Xu Yulin for GUO XU, Shanghai, China, 2019","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["FE.190-2019"],"accessionNumberNum":"190","accessionNumberPrefix":"FE","accessionYear":2019,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-10-02","recordCreationDate":"2019-10-22","availableToBook":false}}
