It was Ronald Crichton, who had been involved in promoting French culture on Britain, who had the idea for La Fête étrange. There is an extremely enlightening detailed letter, dated 3 June 1941, from Crichton to Cyril Beaumont in the Beaumont Archive (held in the Theatre and Performance department), in which he explains how he came to suggest the use of the children’s party episode from Henri Alain-Founier’s Le Grand Meaulnes and music by Fauré for a possible ballet. Designer Sophie Fedorovitch and Crichton planned the detailed scenario and suggested its use to Howard on her return from the USA. The ballet was an atmospheric chamber work.\r\n\r\nLa Fête étrange was revived for Sadler’s Theatre Ballet on 25 March 1947 at the New Theatre when the names of the lead characters were changed, the number of guests was increased and some costumes reallocated. Greta Hamby was one of the guests partnered by Kenneth MacMillan in this revival. The diarist, Lionel Bradley, regretted changes but was pleased t that he was not ‘aware of any important change in the costumes (apart from the additions)’ as they were ‘some of the loveliest & most effective that even Fedorovitch has designed.’ The Sadler's Wells Theatre production was photographed by Edward Mandinian. \n\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"Costume design for a guest in a dress with a black off-the-shoulders fitted bodice and white floral decorations on the bow of the sash and on the sleeves.
