Berwick had decided that this would be the pantomime after which he would retire, hence the title The Grand Old Dame of York, a play on the title of the children's song The Grand Old Duke of York.\r\n\r\nBerwick Kaler's annual pantomimes were hugely popular in York where he became a well-known local celebrity and where people queued all night outside the theatre to buy tickets. Generations of children knew Berwick as the Dame. He called his audiences: 'Me babbie, me bairns' and threw chocolate biscuits called Wagon Wheels out to them, handing bottles of Newcastle Brown Ale to fortunate recipients in the stalls.\n\nDuring Berwick's last performances at York in late January and early February 2019 he read messages from the audience thanking him for all the fun and joy which his pantomimes had provided for audience members over the years.","physicalDescription":"Colour lithograph poster for The Grand Old Dame of York illustrated with a large photograph of Berwick Kaler as Dame and small vignette photographs of his Dames in York pantomimes over the previous 39 years","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Instaprint","id":"AUTH354062"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"x39782"},"note":"Inbstaprint is an online printing business based in Rotherham"}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"printing ink","id":"x35423"}],"techniques":[{"text":"","id":""},{"text":"printed","id":"x46159"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Advertising","id":"THES49001"},{"text":"Posters","id":"THES252963"},{"text":"Cross-dressing","id":"THES274899"},{"text":"Pantomime","id":"THES266218"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2019MG8375"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES356743"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"posters","id":"AAT27221"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Rotherham","id":"x38435"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"x46159"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2018","earliest":"2018-01-01","latest":"2018-12-31"},"association":{"text":"printed","id":"x46159"},"note":" "}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"S.701:1-2019","id":"O1513293"},"association":"Object"}],"creditLine":"Gift of York Theatre Royal","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"42.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"29.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":" ","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"The poster advertises The Grand Old Dame of York, the 40th pantomime written and performed by Berwick Kaler at York Theatre Royal, opening on 13th December 2018, starring Berwick Kaler as Dame, with Martin Barrass, Suzy Cooper, A.J.
