Genée inserted this solo into the 'Treasure Island' scene from the ballet Monte Cristo when she made her debut at the Empire Theatre, London. She also included it in The Soul Kiss, presented in the USA in 1908 when this illustration was made, and in 1911 added it to A Dream of Roses and Butterflies for the London Coliseum.\n\nClaire Avery (1879-1927) was an American artist-illustrator, painter and teacher who befriended Adeline Genée when she visited the USA. She made a number of drawings of the ballerina in performance and off stage, and the New York Times noted that Avery’s images of Genée revealed the artist's 'remarkable gift for the interpretation of swift motion. The dainty elegance and grace of the dancer are caught with almost incredible truth and expressiveness.’\r\n","physicalDescription":"Five images of Adeline Genée in a pink tutu, dancing her solo from Die Rose von Schiras.
