Major feasts are mostly conventional but include a feast for St Ursinus on 11th June. The Translation of St Ursinus was a Rouen feast usually celebrated on 12th June. The inclusion of this feast, albeit a day early, suggests the manuscript could have been made, or associated with Rouen. \r\nff. 13r-57v: Hours of the Virgin, Use of Lisieux; from Lauds, the Hours of the Cross and Holy Spirit are appended to each hour. \r\nff. 58r-58v: Last leaf of quire 8, ruled but left blank. \r\nff. 59r-75r: Penitential Psalms, with litany (ff.70v-73v) followed by a collect, Deus cui propium. In the litany, Romanus, a saint traditionally associated with Rouen, is among confessors. \r\nff. 75r-80v: Gospel periscopes (John 1: 1-14 followed by an antiphon Te invocamus, te adoramus; Luke 1: 26-38; Matthew 2: 1-12; Mark 16: 14-20). \r\nff. 81r-110r: Office of the Dead, Use of Rome. \r\nff. 110r-114r: Prayer Obsecro te…ego miser peccator sum facturus. \r\nff. 114r-118r: Prayer O intemerata…orbis terrarum. \r\nff. 117v and 118v: Two series of prayers added in margin and unwritten space, written in Secretary and a textura hand of the early 16th century, in purple ink. \r\nff. 118r-118v: Series of notes of births between 1528-1538, written in faint cursive Secretary hand. Details are given of the day and time of birth, the day of baptism, the officiating priest, godparents and occasionally places. The name of the annotator’s family is not clear, but may be either Grien or Goren. \n\r\nDecoration: \r\n4 half-page miniatures depicting the Annunciation (f.13r), the Nativity (f.34v), David in Penitence (f.59r) and a funeral service (f.81r). The compositions, conventions for landscape backgrounds, palette and hatching and cross-hatching in brushed gold on garments are in a style consistent with what was current in Rouen in the 1480s. \r\nThe half-page miniatures have full border frames with blue and brushed gold acanthus, tendrils with leaves and berries and compartments of flowers or fruit on brushed gold grounds. \r\nMajor text divisions without miniatures, such as individual hours, have half frame borders. \r\nThe half page initials and the major textual divisions with half frame borders have 4-line letter shaped initials comprised of blue letter shape on burnished gold grounds with compartments of flowers and fruits. The manuscript also contains smaller champie initials.\r\n\r\nBinding: \r\n15th century, France: calf over wooded boards decorated with multiple small stamps in blind (hog, paschal lamb, lion, lamb, pelican); the remains of two clasps on the fore-edge; lower cover with pastedown of a 14th-century legal text. \r\n19th century, France or England: spine rebacked with deep red morocco.\r\n\n","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Parchment","id":"AAT11851"},{"text":"Ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"pigments","id":"x33204"},{"text":"gold","id":"AAT11021"},{"text":"calf leather","id":"x36873"},{"text":"morocco leather","id":"AAT227857"},{"text":"wood","id":"AAT11914"}],"techniques":[{"text":"illumination","id":"AAT220539"},{"text":"blind stamping","id":"AAT192907"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Ink, pigments and gold on parchment.
