This was more elaborate than the original set for London. \n\nThe Lady and the Fool is an operetta-style light ballet set to music from Verdi's operas - just out of copyright at the time of the ballet's creation in 1954. The ballet concerns a mysterious society beauty, La Capriciossa, who rejects her wealthy suitors for the sincere love of the poor clown, Moondog. \n\nDescribing the original design for The Lady and the Fool Cranko's biographer Ashley Killar wrote; 'it is easy to see why Crank judged the mood of the ballet was matched by Beer's style....The interior had an Italianate architecture and a wide balcony looking onto a blushing, watery sky, set off by blowsy-looking statues and line-drawn greenery.'\n\nThis design is reproduced in Jennifer Hawkins Opie, Richard Beer: Art & Life, 2019, p.44.\r\n","physicalDescription":"The design shows an elaborate fin de siècle ballroom with colonnade balcony and wide steps down from an entrance.\r\n\nAnnotated on reverse in pencil: ‘3B’ £100 [?] The Lady & the Fool Berlin production’.\r\n","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Beer, Richard","id":"A13848"},"association":{"text":"designers","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing (image-making)","id":"AAT54196"},{"text":"painting (image-making)","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pen and ink and watercolour on paper","categories":[{"text":"Dance","id":"THES252984"},{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2019MK1546"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES356672"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Set design","id":"THES284798"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1965","earliest":"1965-01-01","latest":"1965-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the estate of Richard Beer","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"55.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"76.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":" ‘3B’ £100 [?] The Lady & the Fool Berlin production'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Written on reverse"}],"objectHistory":"Retained by the artist during his life and given to the V&A by his estate after his death.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Set design by Richard Beer for the Berlin production of John Cranko’s ballet The Lady and the Fool, 1965","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["S.752-2019"],"accessionNumberNum":"752","accessionNumberPrefix":"S","accessionYear":2019,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-18","recordCreationDate":"2019-09-23","availableToBook":false}}
