In this painting, and typical of much of his style, he is working in the Dutch 'realist' manner of Jacob van Ruisdael. Indeed, the composition seems to have been inspired by that artist's famous Mill at Wijk in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, which Müller may have known through an engraving. In this landscape, his enthusiasm for the substance of oil paints and their uses in expressing such natural phenomena as windswept sea and the sky is very clear.\r\n\r\nMüller's attitude to his art was thoroughly modern, and shot through with Romantic energy and passion: 'I want to paint', he exclaimed, 'it's oozing out of my fingers'. He was devoted to painting out-of-doors rather than in the studio, in close communion with the landscape, like Constable making written and graphic notes of light and weather. 'I do hope to see a storm', he noted during a painting tour of Wales, 'I long to see one'.","physicalDescription":"Oil painting depicting a coast scene with a windmill to the right of the composition.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Müller, William James","id":"A2311"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"oil","id":"AAT14254"},{"text":"canvas","id":"AAT14078"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Oil on canvas","categories":[{"text":"Images Online","id":"THES48937"},{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006AN6843","2017KC2553"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"A","id":"THES304239"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"oil paintings","id":"AAT33799"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1837","earliest":"1837-01-01","latest":"1837-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Joshua Dixon","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"34.125","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"estimate","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"55.375","unit":"in","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"estimate","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"123","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"176.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""},{"dimension":"","value":"","unit":"","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Measurement taken at time of assessment prior to BH decant - Frame Dimensions (mm): H-1230 W-1770 D-160;\nPainting Dimensions (mm): not measured"}],"dimensionsNote":"Dimensions taken from <i>Summary catalogue of British Paintings</i>, Victoria and Albert Museum, 1973","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Christie's mark, Lot 118, Mar 29, 1862","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"On back"},{"content":"Signed and dated 1837","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"Bequeathed by Joshua Dixon, 1886","historicalContext":"Müller's attitude to his art was thoroughly modern, and shot through with Romantic energy and passion: 'I want to paint', he exclaimed, 'it's oozing out of my fingers'.
