The company collaborates with local artisans to construct projects using traditional methods. Architectural models play a vital role in the creative and construction processes of the practice. After initial designs are completed they are finalised by producing very detailed scale models, made from hand whittled bamboo. The models are then digitally replicated in 3D on a computer and studied to ensure they meet strict engineering criteria. From this process technical drawings are produced. The architectural models are then used on site, in combination with technical drawings, to inform the build. The local artisans have generations of experience in building with bamboo and can often deduce directly from the models the correct size and type of pole required.\n\r\nBamboo is one of the world’s most sustainable building materials. It grows very rapidly in poor conditions without chemical fertilisers and releases 35% more oxygen into the atmosphere than trees. It is also ultimately biodegradable.\n\r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"Architectural model of a delicate five tiered structure with sloping roofs made of bamboo on a black styrofoam base","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Hardy, Elora","id":"AUTH353864"},"association":{"text":"Designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Kerta, Nyoman","id":"AUTH354393"},"association":{"text":"model maker","id":"AAT248289"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"IBUKU","id":"AUTH353808"},"association":{"text":"architects","id":"AAT24987"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bamboo splints","id":"x37334"},{"text":"twine","id":"AAT14251"},{"text":"styrofoam","id":"AAT14568"},{"text":"adhesive","id":"AAT14801"}],"techniques":[{"text":"model-making","id":"AAT53619"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Architectural models","id":"THES274433"},{"text":"Sustainability","id":"THES285124"},{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2020MN9366","2020MN9367","2020MN9368","2020MN9369","2020MN9370"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"CA028","id":"THES413428"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"architectural models","id":"x44244"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Bali","id":"x32033"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2011","earliest":"2011-01-01","latest":"2011-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the IBUKU Studio ","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"450","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"1000","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"650","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Architectural model by IBUKU design practice for Sharma Springs residence, Bali, 2011, bamboo and twine on a styrofoam base\r\n\r\nImage is of the model on display during London Design Festival 2019","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"Model","id":"THES48867"},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.955-2019"],"accessionNumberNum":"955","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":2019,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-05-20","recordCreationDate":"2019-09-19","availableToBook":false}}
