First presented at Minton’s stand at the Great Exhibition of 1851, majolica was awarded with the Council medal and became incredibly popular with both Queen Victoria and the general public. It was seen by many as a novel ceramic art form which appealed to the opulent spirit of the Victorian era.\r\n\r\nThis 'Flower-bearers' cistern has been attributed to Albert Ernest Carrier-Belleuse, a French sculptor who moved to England in 1848 and would go onto have a long career and relationship with the Minton factory as a designer and modeller. In 1876 he was appointed Artistic Director at Sèvres in Paris, and in 1881 entered into an agreement with Minton to make models exclusively for them. Amongst other wares Carrier-Belleuse made many designs for majolica, including this impressive cistern, which was shown at the 1871 London International Exhibition, the 1873 Vienna Exhibition and the 1876 Exhibtiion in Philadelphia, exhibted by the London retailers A. B. Daniells of Wigmore Street. Another example of the 'Flower-bearers' cistern was shown at the Imperial Institute in London in 1894, priced at 27 guineas and revealing the enduring appeal of this design.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Minton","id":"A9175"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Earthenware","id":"THES48964"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2019MJ0821","2019MJ0820"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"005","id":"THES341209"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Cistern","id":"AAT52558"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Stoke-on-Trent","id":"x29185"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Bequeathed by Mrs Annemarie Aschenagi","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"62","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"99","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"49","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"'Flower-bearers' cistern, Minton, Stoke-on-Trent, earthenware and majolica glazes, about 1870-90","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["C.64-2019"],"accessionNumberNum":"64","accessionNumberPrefix":"C","accessionYear":2019,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-12-30","recordCreationDate":"2019-09-04","availableToBook":false}}
