Garner began photographing as a child and has maintained a close relationship with the medium both personally and professionally ever since.  He joined Sotheby’s Auctioneers in 1971, embarking on what would be a thirty-year career with the company. He was responsible for holding the first specialist auction of photography in the UK. In 2002, Garner joined de Pury & Luxembourg as Worldwide Director of Photographs and 20th and 21st Century Design, following which he took up post as International Head of Photographs and 20th Century Decorative Art & Design at Christies London, from which he retired in 2016. \r\n\r\nGarner has written extensively about twentieth-century photography and curated numerous exhibitions. In 2004 he became an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and in 2011 was given their Award for Outstanding Service to Photography.\r\n\r\nGarner’s personal photographic practice reflects his interest and appreciation for vernacular photography, as well as the places he visited over the course of his 45-year career. His formalist approach to capturing his subject is reflective of his exposure to a vast history of photography, inheriting influences from masters such as Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander and Helmut Newton. His photographs are useful in a broad way when thinking about modern urban environments and the typographies and advertisements we engage with daily.  Most often devoid of people, Garner’s photographs poetically represent the atmosphere that is felt in spaces that people have passed through, capturing the sentiment of human absence.
