After working in her father’s studio between the ages of 13 and 18, Rocha trained at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin and then at Central Saint Martins in London. Simone's graduate collection was presented in Tate Modern, and she debuted at London Fashion Week in 2010. She received early acclaim and a loyal following. She was named Young Designer of the Year by Harper's Bazaar in 2014, and Womenswear Designer of the Year (2016) in the British Fashion Awards. By 2017 she had her own brand shops in London and New York.\r\n\r\nRocha’s aesthetic is associated with a youthful sensibility and the creative use of volume and scale. Fashion critic Sarah Mower, writing for British Vogue in February 2018, praised Rocha’s work for its artistic and tactile sensibility, and for catering to ‘women of all ages and sizes who […] love the access to the special kind of feminist femininity Rocha offers’.\r\n\r\nThis coat is a hybrid, mixing a traditional wool overcoat and a ‘faux fur’ coat. With a torso and sleeves of wool tartan and a skirt made from imitation fur, the coat creates ‘a sense of grandeur, and some shots of punk’ (Women’s Wear Daily). The fashion journal described Rocha’s Autumn 2018 collection, in which this featured as look 18, as ‘marked by the volume and drama that Simone Rocha has come to be known for’. The collection was inspired by the portraits of the landscape painter John Constable (1776-1837), whose simplicity and purity of line Rocha admired. A particular reference was the portrait of Mary Freer (NPG, London). Several fine net chemise dresses in the same 2018 collection were reminiscent of early 19th-century muslin gowns of the type Constable depicted in the Freer portrait, though Rocha dramatically deconstructs and subverts the silhouette.\r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"Woman's double-breasted coat, red and black tartan wool with a deep hem of black faux fur","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Rocha, Simone","id":"AUTH342616"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wool","id":"x40131"},{"text":"faux fur","id":"x38540"}],"techniques":[{"text":"sewing","id":"AAT53658"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"wool; faux fur","categories":[{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Clothing","id":"THES48975"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"RAIL","id":"THES385819"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Coat","id":"AAT46143"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"No","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2018","earliest":"2018-01-01","latest":"2018-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed and made","id":"x39722"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Simone Rocha","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"118","unit":"cm","qualifier":"nape to hem","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Coat is a standard size 10"},{"dimension":"Circumference","value":"84","unit":"cm","qualifier":"of waist approx","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"41","unit":"cm","qualifier":"across shoulders","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Clothing size","value":"10","unit":"","qualifier":"UK size 10","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"This coat was part of Look 18 in the Fall 2018 Ready-to-Wear collection of Simone Rocha.
