The morse (clasp) is also preserved, albeit detached. The orphrey is made of two long panels of velvet of an exceptional quality, as indicated by the density of the pile and the profound shade of red, most likely obtained by cochineal dye. The absence of selvedges and ornament makes it impossible to establish its production place with certainty but it must have been woven in a leading silk-weaving centre in Spain or Italy. The only dateable feature of the orphrey is the galloon trimming its edges, which is entirely woven with silver-gilt metal-wrapped threads in an apparently simple but elegant and dynamic pattern. A serrated line meanders around small rectangular openings which are somewhat reminiscent of the tears in fashionable 17th-century slashed silks. In addition, the maker of the orphrey lined the galloon with strips of red silk taffeta that show through the openings, a surprising way to further enhance the elaborate trimming and another indication of the original costliness of the cope. Even without embroideries (usually concentrated on the orphrey), the use of crimson velvet, metallic galloons and silk taffeta indicates great expense. \r\n\r\n","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"Two segments of the galloon are stitched across the middle of the orphrey. This interruption, or accentuated marking, of the orphrey’s centre, is more commonly found on copes made in Spain or France than on those made in Italy. On balance therefore, it seems more likely that the velvet was woven in Spain.","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["T.83:1-2021","T.83:2-2021"],"accessionNumberNum":"83","accessionNumberPrefix":"T","accessionYear":2021,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-05","recordCreationDate":"2019-08-09","availableToBook":true}}
