His pupils included several artists represented in this exhibition, notably Mulready, Linnell, Cox, and De Wint. His technique and style bridged the conventional eighteenth-century 'Picturesque' theories of an overall 'golden glow' derived from the old masters, and the fresher, more glittering palettes of the younger generation of Turner and Bonington. He experimented, as here, with using copal or gum to varnish the darker tones to give the richness of an oil painting. Also here he works on the surface of the coarse wove paper with the sharp end of his brush, to increase the atmospheric effects of mountain mist and light.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Varley, John","id":"A2435"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"watercolour","id":"AAT15045"}],"techniques":[{"text":"painting","id":"AAT54216"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2006BH7622","2006AN6824"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"A","id":"THES304475"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"water-colours","id":"AAT78925"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"England","id":"x28826"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1841","earliest":"1836-01-01","latest":"1845-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Ellison Gift","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"51","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"69.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"framed","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Watercolour by John Varley depicting a mountain landscape.
