Lise changes into this white dress for her intended betrothal to Alain, who she does not wish to marry. The plans for the wedding collapse when she is discovered in the arms of her beloved Colas and the ballet ends in a good-natured celebration. Throughout the ballet ribbons have been a feature, used in the first scene for the pas de deux in which they become the horses' reins and the cat's cradle, and in scene two for a pas d'action. Lancaster has therefore incorporated a design of ribbons as decoration on to Lise's bodice. The costume is an interesting example of 1960s cobstruction using nylon chiffon and lace. \n\nThe costume was worn by Diana Vere between 1968 and 1974 when she danced with both The Royal Ballet and the Royal Ballet Touring Company. It was given to Diana when she retired from The Royal Ballet. It is a common practice for dancers to be given one of their favourite costumes on their retirement. Vere (1942-2018) was a ballerina of natural charm and exceptional musicality. Born in Trinidad, she trained at The Royal Ballet School and during her time there won the Adeline Genée Medal. She danced with The Royal Ballet and Royal Ballet Touring Company between 1962 and 1974 taking many principal roles. She created roles for Frederick Ashton and Kenneth MacMillan, danced one of the Girls in Grey in Les Biches, worked with Rudolf Nureyev and famously replaced Antoinette Sibley as Giselle in 1970 at short notice. She married Gary Sherwood in 1973.\r\n","physicalDescription":"Lise’s final dress designed by Osbert Lancaster in Act II of the ballet La Fille mal gardée worn by Diana Vere.\r\nThe costume consists of a white dress trimmed with ribbons (ribbons are featured in different ways throughout the ballet).
