An admirer of Dresser, Harrison hired the designer as Art Superintendent until 1882 along with skilled workers from the Staffordshire Potteries and artists trained at the Schools of Art, South Kensington. The artist Henry Tooth (1842-1918) was appointed as the pottery manager on recommendation by Dresser. Tooth had no previous experience in the role yet the works produced in collaboration with Dresser between 1879 and ‘82, are some of the most innovative of Linthorpe's production.Ceramic manufacture marks for both men can be found on this vase.","physicalDescription":"Bottle-shaped vase, earthenware with lead glazes.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Dresser, Christopher","id":"A8351"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"AAT25190"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Tooth, Henry","id":"A6196"},"association":{"text":"maker","id":"AAT251917"},"note":"workshop of"}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Linthorpe Pottery","id":"A18762"},"association":{"text":"manufacturer","id":"AAT25230"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"lead glaze","id":"AAT233430"},{"text":"earthenware","id":"x29356"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Lead-glazed earthenware","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Art Pottery","id":"THES49021"},{"text":"Earthenware","id":"THES48964"},{"text":"Scotland","id":"THES262877"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"CER","id":"THES48594"},"images":["2010EC2479"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"139","id":"THES49874"},"free":"","case":"35","shelf":"3","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Vase","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Middlesbrough","id":"x36013"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1880","earliest":"1875-01-01","latest":"1884-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"17.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"8.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"'H / 880 / LINTHORPE'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Maker's mark impressed on base"},{"content":"'Chr Dresser'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Facsimile signature impressed on base"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Bottle shaped vase, lead-glazed earthenware, designed by Christopher Dresser, Workshop of Henry Tooth with Linthorpe Pottery, Middlesbrough, ca. 1880","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Bryant, Julius.<u> Art and Design for all: The Victoria and Albert Museum </u>.
