Patricia Mary Ross Mackenzie was born in Canada in 1923 and her first job was working as a personal shopper at  Eaton's department store in Toronto. During the latter part of the Second World War she joined the  Royal Canadian Airforce. She later moved to London and in 1950 was working for Trans-Canada Airlines. Whilst working in London, an old boyfriend came to visit and proposed to her. The pair planned to marry in Monte Carlo and she bought this dress in preparation, although the marriage never took place.
