Born in Japan, he studied fashion at Bunka Fashion College in Tokyo before moving to Paris in 1965. Takada opened his first store in 1970 at 43 Galerie Vivienne. \r\n\r\nTakada is known for his lively and colourful designs which often draw inspiration from multiple cultures. This skirt, designed around 1986, is typical of his aesthetic in the 1980s. It is made from printed cotton with a brown ground and batik-style design which is overlaid with printed flowers in multiple colours. Batik, a form of wax-resist dyeing, is a technique particularly associated with the island of Java in Indonesia. The skirt is a wraparound style formed of flat panels falling to the front and back and pleats flaring out to the sides. Takada’s design inspiration for the skirt is unknown but it is very similar to the type of skirt worn by Han women in China in the late 19th century for formal occasions (for example, FE.12-1980). \r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"Skirt made from cotton, it has a brown ground with a batik-style design overlaid with printed flowers in multiple colours, it is designed as a wrap skirt with flat panels falling to the front and back and pleats flaring out to the sides, an attached red ribbon serves as belt.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Kenzo Takada","id":"A4099"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Kenzo","id":"A4102"},"association":{"text":"brand","id":"x30588"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cotton (textile)","id":"AAT14067"}],"techniques":[{"text":"weaving","id":"AAT53642"},{"text":"sewing","id":"AAT53658"},{"text":"printing","id":"AAT53319"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Printed cotton, plain weave","categories":[{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"},{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2019MK4350","2019MK4351","2019MC0617"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"004","id":"THES307963"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Skirt","id":"AAT209932"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Paris","id":"x29068"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"c. 1986","earliest":"1980-01-01","latest":"1986-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Antonia Boström","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Width","value":"117","unit":"","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"botton of waistband, flat","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"74","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"edge","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"The skirt was purchased in Paris in 1986.
