It was founded in Madrid in 1846 by a group of leather craftsmen. It was not until 1872 when a German, Enrique Loewe Rossenberg, joined the group that the brand was fully established and LOEWE became known for its precision, technical excellence and exquisite craftmanship. They were appointed Official Supplier to the Spanish Royal Crown in 1905. In 1965, following their success selling leather goods, LOEWE expanded into the ready-to-wear clothing market. Today, LOEWE is owned by the LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton group who bought the house in 1996. With the arrival of the Northern Irish designer Jonathan Anderson as Creative Director in 2013, LOEWE gained more recognition on the international stage. Anderson studied at London College of Fashion and started his career in fashion as a visual merchandiser for Prada. He founded his fashion label JW Anderson in 2008 and is known for designs which mix the traditional and the avant-garde. Anderson’s first collection for LOEWE was released in 2014 to popular acclaim in the fashion press. His subsequent collections have been equally well received. This jumper is part of a special seasonal collection designed for Christmas 2018, inspired by the work of the Scottish architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh. With large floral motifs and bright colours on a simple silhouette, the jumper was notably inspired by Mackintosh's stained glass designs.","physicalDescription":"Jumper of knitted black wool, decorated with applique of large knitted flowers of multiple colours on the front.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Jonathan Anderson","id":"AUTH344425"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"LOEWE","id":"A4480"},"association":{"text":"brand","id":"x30588"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"wool","id":"x40131"}],"techniques":[{"text":"applique","id":"AAT53646"},{"text":"embroidery","id":"x40351"},{"text":"knitting","id":"AAT53634"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Knitted wool, applique embroidery of knitted flowers","categories":[{"text":"Botanical art","id":"THES277744"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Embroidery","id":"THES48960"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Scotland","id":"THES262877"},{"text":"Knitting","id":"THES266024"},{"text":"Men's clothes","id":"THES49043"},{"text":"Stained Glass","id":"THES48891"},{"text":"Textiles","id":"THES48885"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2020MP9227"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"006","id":"THES305801"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Jumper","id":"THES271574"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Spain","id":"x29170"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"2018","earliest":"2018-01-01","latest":"2018-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by the Loewe Foundation","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"55.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":"Centre front, neck to hem"}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"The jumper, called ‘Sweater botanical’, was designed by Jonathan Anderson for LOEWE as part of a special seasonal collection for Christmas 2018, inspired by the work of the Scottish architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
