The gathers at the back of the skirt show the movement towards the fuller skirts of the mid-nineteenth century. \r\n\r\nAlthough more naturalistic in appearance the Regency silhouette was still achieved with corsetry, which was less rigid than that of the 18th century and separated and defined the breasts for the first time. Bold bright silks such as this striped fabric were popular for eveningwear. The silk for this dress would have been a significant expense and the visible selvedges in the inside seams shows that the dressmaker put every last inch of the material to good use.\r\n\r\nRibbons and trimmings were key to a fashionable look in the early nineteenth century and an accessible way for a woman to update her appearance. An evening look could be altered fairly spontaneously with the addition of trimmings, coloured petticoats, infils at the bust and over sleeves or under sleeves of silk chiffon. Jane Austen wrote to her sister Cassandra from London in 1814 of the new vogue for long sleeves worn in the evening, although she was not entirely convinced herself by the new fashion. The detachable sleeves for this dress allowed the wearer to alter her look depending on the occasion. \r\n\r\nThe Regency period also saw women adopting small drawstring bags called reticules as opposed the fashionable pockets of the eighteenth century. In these they might carry a fan, a coin purse or perhaps a vinaigrette - a small metal box containing a sponge soaked in vinegar and perfumed oils. The self-fabric reticule in this ensemble has been attached at the waistband with a length of ribbon but this is likely to have been a later alteration as they usually hung from the wearer’s wrist.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n","physicalDescription":"Evening dress of pearl and mauve striped satin, with appliqué silk chiffon chevrons at the hem. The bottom of the skirt is also decorated with three padded self-fabric bands and an additional padded band of silver satin. The short puff sleeves have a cuff edged in pearl satin piping. Separate long sleeves of mauve silk chiffon edged with matching mauve satin piping can be attached by stitching to the outside sleeve. \r\n\r\nThe dress fastens at the back with three hooks and eyes and cream silk ribbon at the neck. Pleating at the centre back provides a little volume to the back of the skirt which has a slight train. The high-waisted bodice is lined with linen. The skirt in unlined and the fabric selvedge is visible in a number of the seams. A small self-fabric drawstring reticule is attached to the exterior waistband with a cream satin ribbon which matches the fastening at the neck. \r\n","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"silk (textile)","id":"AAT243428"},{"text":"linen (material)","id":"AAT14069"}],"techniques":[{"text":"weaving","id":"AAT53642"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Womenswear","id":"THES49044"},{"text":"Fashion","id":"THES48957"},{"text":"Evening wear","id":"THES48999"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2024NU9022","2024NU9290","2024NU9291","2024NU9292","2024NU9293","2024NU9294","2024NU9295","2024NU9296","2024NU9297","2024NU9298","2024NU9299","2024NU9300","2024NU9301","2024NU9302","2024NU9303","2024NU9304"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES404189"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES404189"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""},{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES404189"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"dress","id":"AAT224227"}],[{"text":"Sleeve","id":"AAT210530"}],[{"text":"Sleeve","id":"AAT210530"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1820-1825","earliest":"1820-01-01","latest":"1825-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"124","unit":"cm","qualifier":"(centre back neck to back hem)","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Length","value":"18.7","unit":"cm","qualifier":"centre back of neck to waistband","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Circumference","value":"59.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"waistband","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Circumference","value":"206","unit":"cm","qualifier":"hem","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Circumference","value":"24.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"sleeve cuff","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Evening dress of striped lilac and cream coloured woven silk, with separate oversleeves and decoration at hem of silk gauze.
