Doré, based in Paris, had a five-year contract with the publishers, to visit London for three months a year and make 250 illustrations for an amazing annual salary of £10,000. <i>London</i> dealt with all aspects of the city: its inhabitants, their pleasures and vices, its buildings and events, its high society, workers and derelicts. Doré's images are not so much strictly documentary - although they tell us a great deal about nineteenth-century London - as highly imaginative.","physicalDescription":"Pen and ink illustration with wash and chinese white showing London workmen.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Gustave Doré","id":"A9378"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"pen and ink","id":"x30618"},{"text":"wash","id":"AAT11051"},{"text":"kaolinite","id":"AAT13815"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"x32498"},{"text":"wash technique","id":"AAT182748"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pen and ink wash with chinese white","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Illustration","id":"THES48938"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2012FU0869","2006AN6828","2017KB7893"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"I","shelf":"116","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawings","id":"AAT33973"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1869-72","earliest":"1869-01-01","latest":"1872-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":"published 1872"}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by E.
