The plan of the church is traditional, being narrow and rectangular with the entrance at the west end and the altar at the east. This was in part dictated by the confines of the site, but also by the church’s Anglo-Catholic liturgical tradition which preferred an axial, processional plan. This traditional plan is in contrast to the majority of contemporary churches, which locate congregations around a central altar in order to emphasise the participatory aspect of the Communion. \n\r\nIn scale, Jenkins’ design echoes that of its Victorian predecessor, which was built to a vast scale, able to seat 900, and visually dominated the area’s skyline. Despite being a much smaller church in capacity, seating just 140, Jenkins has maintained the church’s visual dominance, making it an architectural and spiritual focal point in the surrounding area. This aspect of the design generated serious opposition from the local council, which argued – unsuccessfully – that the new church should blend in with the surrounding architecture.","physicalDescription":"Ink sketches on A5 paper for altar candle holders with dimensions for fabrication and descriptions of the finish required.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Jenkins, Peter","id":"AUTH348809"},"association":{"text":"architect","id":"AAT24987"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Peter Inskip + Peter Jenkins Architects","id":"AUTH377010"},"association":{"text":"architects","id":"AAT24987"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"},{"text":"paper","id":"AAT14109"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"AAT54196"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pen on paper","categories":[{"text":"Architectural drawings","id":"THES274432"},{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"},{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2022NE3416"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLE","id":"THES49657"},"free":"","case":"A","shelf":"240","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"design","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1988-1993","earliest":"1988-01-01","latest":"1993-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Peter Jenkins","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"140","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"215","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Annotated in ink with dimensions"},{"content":"'2nd candle holders for St Paul Harringey [sic] / 'Candle Ø = 34 / Candle socket 6\" deep / Black granite with 'face' type texture??'","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Annotated in ink with notes to fabricator"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Sketch for candle holders for St Paul's Church, Harringay, London, by Peter Jenkins of Peter Inskip + Peter Jenkins Architects, pen on paper, London, 1988-1993","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Taken from notes by Peter Jenkins (Clare Lodge, Practice Archivist, 25/02/2016)\r\n\r\n\"Ink sketches by PJ on A5 paper of the altar candle holders with dimensions for fabrication by the granite workshops in Mahabaliporum India organised by Stephen Cox, included are descriptions of the finish required and note the incorrect spelling by PJ of ‘Harringay’ (the name of the Anglican parish) as ‘Haringey,’ probably in too much haste to complete the drawing.
