The plan of the church is traditional, being narrow and rectangular with the entrance at the west end and the altar at the east. This was in part dictated by the confines of the site, but also by the church’s Anglo-Catholic liturgical tradition which preferred an axial, processional plan. This traditional plan is in contrast to the majority of contemporary churches, which locate congregations around a central altar in order to emphasise the participatory aspect of the Communion. \n\r\nIn scale, Jenkins’ design echoes that of its Victorian predecessor, which was built to a vast scale, able to seat 900, and visually dominated the area’s skyline. Despite being a much smaller church in capacity, seating just 140, Jenkins has maintained the church’s visual dominance, making it an architectural and spiritual focal point in the surrounding area. This aspect of the design generated serious opposition from the local council, which argued – unsuccessfully – that the new church should blend in with the surrounding architecture.","physicalDescription":"Preliminary working drawing of the candle stand.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Jenkins, Peter","id":"AUTH348809"},"association":{"text":"architect","id":"AAT24987"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Peter Inskip + Peter Jenkins Architects","id":"AUTH377010"},"association":{"text":"architects","id":"AAT24987"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Pencil","id":"x30347"},{"text":"Tracing Paper","id":"AAT14161"}],"techniques":[{"text":"drawing","id":"AAT54196"},{"text":"Architectural drawing","id":"AAT54197"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil on tracing paper.","categories":[{"text":"Architectural drawings","id":"THES274432"},{"text":"Architecture","id":"THES48993"},{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Designs","id":"THES48968"},{"text":"Religion","id":"THES48900"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2022NE3397"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"DR","shelf":"26","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"design","id":"AAT102051"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Haringey","id":"x29473"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"23/06/1993","earliest":"1993-06-23","latest":"1993-06-23"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Peter Jenkins","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"840","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"632","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"TITLE CANDLE STAND / NEW CHURCH OF ST PAU HARRINGAY / DWG NO STP SK807 /SCALE 1.2 +FS / DATE 23 JUNE 93 / PETER INSKIP + PETER JENKINS ARCHITECTS LTD / 1 NEWBURY STREET LONDON EC1A 7HU / TELEPHONE 01 726 8977 FAX 071 796 3930","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":"Bottom right"}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Design for candle stand, annotated for St. Paul's Church, Harringay, by Peter Jenkins, London, 23 June 1993.","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Taken from notes by Peter Jenkins (Clare Lodge, Practice Archivist, 25/02/2016)\r\n\r\nPreliminary working drawing of the (Easter) candle stand for the sanctuary on A1 tracing paper in pencil by PJ dated 23 June 1993.
