Premises for the new museum were found in the old Flower Market at Covent Garden and an opening date of 1980 was proposed, but cuts in Government funding caused delays and postponements. In May 1982 a Government report on the Science Museum and the V&A recommended that the Theatre Museum should not go ahead, given the economic situation. The announcement was not well received and there was an enormous amount of public support for the Theatre Museum. Two petitions were begun: one by the Evening Standard newspaper, which was very supportive of the Museum. and one by the Theatre Museum Association, which had been created in 1975 to encourage interest in the Museum and support its work. David Hockney kindly donated this drawing of a Commedia dell'Arte clown which was reproduced on the Theatre Museum Association's petition. \n\nTogether the two petitions received over 32,000 signatures. The overwhelming support for the Theatre Museum prompted the Government to think again and in August 1982 it was announced that the Theatre Museum would, in fact, go ahead. However, further funding crises followed and it was not until April 1987 that the Theatre Museum opened in Covent Garden. The Museum remained there until January 2007. It became the V&A Department of Theatre and Performance and, subsequently, part of the Department of Performance, Furniture, Textiles and Fashion.","physicalDescription":"Line drawing of a Commedia dell'Arte clown standing on stage, spotlit, in front of a row of footlights, his arms raised.
