The architecture in this area of northern Spain was influenced by Christianity and Islam and is a source of inspiration and fascination for the artist. Schulz-Dornburg photographed the east windows of these constructions at different times of the day and at different times of the year. The windows act as sundials, streaming light through the main passage.  Through this work, Schulz-Dornburg explores the spirituality of light and darkness, and its influence on the monks who inhabited the hermitages. She also explores the use of light within architecture, and how it transforms and affects man-made interior landscapes. This group of photographs depict the San Esteban de Viguera hermitage.
