In Black Basalt (1994, pp. 253-54) Diana Edwards reproduces several references to potters with this unusual surname who were active in the potting town of Shelton in the second half of the eighteenth century. As she remarks, no other pottery has been put forward to challenge the attribution to Twemlow originally put forward by the Black Basalt collector Col. M.H.
