Quiney is credited with making gift wrap fashionable and producing the first paper tote bags to be sold in the UK retail market. Quiney's use of psychedelia as well as art nouveau and art deco influences printed in different colourways became an instant commercial success selling across Europe and the USA. Such was his success that his designs featured in major publications on style and fashion, Mary Quant adopted his bags as window dressing in her flagship store, Bazaar, on the King's Road and many celebrities, including Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon, used his wrapping paper as decoration in their home.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Nigel Quiney","id":"AUTH348950"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Nigel Quiney Designs","id":"AUTH357558"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28674"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"printing ink","id":"AAT187371"}],"techniques":[{"text":"printing","id":"AAT53319"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Prints","id":"THES48903"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2019LX2412"],"imageResolution":"low","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLC","id":"THES49171"},"free":"","case":"GG","shelf":"244","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"wrapping paper","id":"AAT14177"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1966","earliest":"1966-01-01","latest":"1966-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Nigel Quiney","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"65.1","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"50.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Wrapping Paper, Bird, Nigel Quiney Design, London, 1966","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Quiney, Nigel, More Cock-Eyed Optimism: A Second Memoir - 'The Sixties', London, 2008"},{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Quiney, Nigel, Confessions of a Cock-Eyed Optimist: A Third Memoir - 'The Seventies', London, 2011"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["E.416-2019"],"accessionNumberNum":"416","accessionNumberPrefix":"E","accessionYear":2019,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-18","recordCreationDate":"2019-04-16","availableToBook":false}}
