As early as 1904 he contemplated forming a scriptorium on medieval lines with assistants, and this was achieved after 1918 to produce memorial volumes. He was responsible for the memorial scrolls sent by King George V to next-of kin of the fallen. \nIda Henstock (d. 1982) was a pupil of Madelyn Walker. She worked with Graily Hewitt on the Royal Army Medical Corps Roll of Honour in the early 1920s, and remained his assistant for the rest of her life. She produced the Book of Remembrance for Petersfield Church, Hants, and scrolls for those receiving the Order of the Garter (via the College of Arms).
