It represents the bust of King Philip II. of Spain. It is based on a cameo by Jacopo da Trezzo.\n\nThe sculptor, gem-engraver and medallist Jacopo Nizzola Trezzo (b. Milan ca. 1515 - d. Madrid 1589) served Cosimo II de' Medici as gem-cutter. His earliest medal is dated 1550. Later he worked for Philip II of Spain in the Netherlands (1555-1559) and in Madrid (1559-death). He is highly esteemed as a gem engraver and his medals were modelled with great esteem and delicacy of detail.","physicalDescription":"Elliptic bronze medal, obverse only, depiciting a bust of Philip II. of Spain, with a legend.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze","categories":[{"text":"Coins & Medals","id":"THES48974"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"},{"text":"Royalty","id":"THES48899"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2006AN4903","2006AN4902"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"010","id":"THES395755"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Medal","id":"AAT46025"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"mid 16th century","earliest":"1525-01-01","latest":"1575-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"7.3","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bought for £2, in 1864.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Medal, bronze, bust of Philip II. of Spain with a legend, Italian, mid 16th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Inventory of Art Objects acquired in the Year 1864. <font -u>Inventory of the Objects in the Art Division of the Museum at South Kensington, arranged According to the Dates of their Acquisition.
