The obverse of this medal shows Pope Paul II presiding over the Consistory of 1466 and the reverse shows Christ in a vesica surrounded by angels, the sun, moon, stars and the doctors of the Church.\n\nEmiliano Orfino da Foligno, also called Emiliano di Pier Matteo Orfini, was goldsmith and die-engraver, struck coins for the Papal mint under Pius II and Paul II; the first recorded payment to him is of 13 May 1461. As master of the mint he also organised mints for the Pope at Perugia and Foligno. He continued to work under Paul II and Sixtus IV, probably ceasing to hold office at the death of the latter. \nAndrea da Viterbo was Paul II's favourite jeweller, and is mentioned in documents from 22 September 1464 to 1 April 1475. From 12 December 1464 to 5 August 1468 he was the collegue of Orfini at the mint. \n\nPope Paul II (b. 1418-1471; Pope 1464) was one of the most significant collectors of the 15th century in Italy. While pope, he undertook a programme of building and restoration to increase the magnificence of Rome.","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Andrea da Viterbo","id":"A22239"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"Emiliano Orfini da Foligno","id":"AUTH323888"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"bronze","id":"AAT10957"}],"techniques":[{"text":"casting","id":"AAT53104"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Bronze","categories":[{"text":"Coins & Medals","id":"THES48974"},{"text":"Portraits","id":"THES48906"},{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":[],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"041","id":"THES395740"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Medal","id":"AAT46025"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""},{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"Rome"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1466","earliest":"1461-01-01","latest":"1470-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"7.87","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Bought at Piot Sale Paris for 12s. 10d. in 1864.","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Medal, bronze, Pope Paul II/Christ in glory, by Andrea da Viterbo and Emiliano Orfini da Foligno, Italy, ca. 1466","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Inventory of Art Objects acquired in the Year 1864. <font -u>Inventory of the Objects in the Art Division of the Museum at South Kensington, arranged According to the Dates of their Acquisition.
