They were often built as an act of piety by rich people for the public, water provision being regarded as a particularly meritorious act in the warm climate. The Turkish women here have paused to drink, one of them having lowered her veil in order to do so, while the black servant holds the small boy. His fur-edged coat indicates that his father was a man of substance. While the little girl is dressed in a vividly coloured outfit, the women are completely encased in their feraces or cloaks. The similarity of figure style and subject-matter to Women and a Child in the Victoria and Albert Museum's series of Constantinople characters [D.23-1907] suggests a similar date around the mid 1840s.","physicalDescription":"Watercolour drawing","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Preziosi, Aloysius Rosarius Amadeus Raymondus Andreas (5th Count Preziosi)","id":"A21529"},"association":{"text":"painter (artist)","id":"AAT25136"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"watercolour","id":"x33202"}],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour drawing","id":"x37878"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil and watercolour, heightened with white","categories":[{"text":"Paintings","id":"THES48917"}],"styles":[{"text":"Maltese School","id":"x41235"},{"text":"Orientalism","id":"x31272"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2008BU1221","2006AV3734"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"SC","shelf":"29","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Turkey","id":"x29225"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"about 1845","earliest":"1845-01-01","latest":"1845-12-31"},"association":{"text":"painted","id":"x30138"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, Art Fund, Shell International and the Friends of the V&A","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"28.9","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"22.2","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Signed Preziosi; inscribed on old mount at Constantinople by Preziosi","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"According to Rodney Searight: - `The pair [with SD.832] bt fr Schidlof, Feb.1971, £38'.","historicalContext":"For the subject, cf.
