The bastinado was a form of punishment in which the soles of the feet were beaten with sticks.  Pierson's illustration accompanies Goldsmid's account of witnessing such a scene in Persia. The `Felek' of the title refers to the Persian term `falaka', a wooden plank which was used to secure the feet prior to beating. (Also see SD.1006 by A.W.
