While Istarian stone, in which this is carved, argues for an origin in North-east Italy, it is difficult to date this head accurately. It is suggested that it protruded horizontally from the corner of a pulpit -pulpits of this type did not exist before the 11th century. It is also possible that this head formed part of a caryatid support for a stoup. Figures with heads of similar size to this support such a stoup in Verona Cathedral. This Verona stoup is dated to the beginning of the 12th century.","physicalDescription":"The head, which is fully carved in the round, represents a bald man with moustache, heavy eyebrows, protuberant eyes, and tufts of hair in front of the ears.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Istrian stone","id":"x36755"}],"techniques":[{"text":"carved","id":"AAT53149"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Istrian stone, carved","categories":[{"text":"Sculpture","id":"THES48896"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"SCP","id":"THES48600"},"images":["2019MC3802","2017JX8768"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"003","id":"THES333412"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Head of man","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Italy","id":"x28927"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"ca. 1100-25","earliest":"1095-01-01","latest":"1125-12-31"},"association":{"text":"carved","id":"AAT53149"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"16.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Head of a man.
