Niemeijer, ed., Reisjournal in Aquarel /A Tour in Words and Watercolour, Amsterdam 1986. Mayer visited Sicily c.1778-82. He accompanied Jean Houel on a trip to Mount Etna in 1780, and was referred to in the latter's Voyage pittoresque des isles de Sicile de Malte et de Lipari, Vol.II, Paris, 1784, p.101, as `Dom Louis Mayer, dessinateur du Prince Biscaria'.
