Given that it is Nijinsky appearing as Harlequin this drawing must have been made 1911-1913 rather than when the ballet was first performed in 1910. The drawing shows Harlequin in his characteristic one knee raised pose pulling Pierrot's long sleeves. \n\nValentine Gross (Valentine Hugo, 1887-1968) was an art student in Paris in the 1910s. She became an illustrator, researcher and surrealist painter. A ballet enthusiast, Gross witnessed annual seasons of the Diaghilev Ballets Russes in Paris and made sketches during the performances and rehearsals from 1909 until 1914. In 1913 she exhibited 100 pastels in the foyer of the Théâtre des Champs Elysées and several of her finished illustrations appeared in the periodical, Comoedia Illustré.","physicalDescription":"Pencil drawing showing Vaslav Nijinsky as Harlequin, right, pulling the arms of Adolph Bolm as Pierrot, who stands, left, and turns away from Harlequin.
