Stephenson, the author of the play Pindee Singh, The Pearl of Oude. The play concerned the Indian Rebellion of 1857 to 1858, a major uprising against the rule of the British East India Company which acted as a sovereign power in India for the British Crown. It was also known as the Sepoy Mutiny, and the Indian Mutiny. Many plays of the time used contemporary events, often happening far away, staging them as spectacle for the home audience. Despite the lapse of ten years before the play's production, it was clearly still a sensitive subject. Stephenson wrote of it: 'The main object of this drama is to shadow forth as slightly as possible the social and religious machinery of the Indian Outbreak of 1857, without shocking the spectator with its horrors, and yet making him feel interested in the fate of the heroine, whose pure love triumphs over the false doctrines in which she has been so carefully educated.'\n\nThe play was first produced on Saturday, 17 October 1868 at London's Royal Alfred Theatre, the remodelled and renamed Marylebone Theatre in Church Street, Edgware Road. It had been announced for the previous Saturday but building works and consequent licensing problems incurred the delay. The theatre had been renamed in honour of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (1844-1900), Queen Victoria's second son, and boasted a new act drop illustrating incidents in the life of their 'Sailor Prince and Patron'. He attended the opening night, but the theatre reverted to its old name in 1870.\n\nThe engraving reproduced on this poster gives an idea of the play's spectacular scenery at the Royal Alfred Theatre, including a scene in a ruined temple at the festival of Siva; the Grotto of Siva, and the Mihrab's Palace at Calpee. The heroine of the play, Pindee Singh, was played by the theatre's manager Miss Amy Sedgwick, who can be seen in her costume in a photograph also in the V&A's collection.","physicalDescription":"Poster printed in black ink on white paper headed 'To Managers of Theatres', including a reproduction of an engraved image of Pindee Singh, the heroine of the play, in the Temple of Seva.
