The silk is dyed using the fruit of Diospyros mollis, locally known as mặc nưa, a variety of ebony. The fruit is harvested once a year, and the dyeing process takes around two months, involving repeated dipping, drying and beating of the fabric. This produces the silk’s characteristic deep black colour and subtle green sheen, while making it soft, glossy and durable.\n\r\nThe embroidered jacket draws on the tradition of Hue, the imperial capital of the Nguyen Dynasty (1802–1945). In Vietnam, silk robes heavily embroidered with metal-wrapped threads were reserved exclusively for court dress until the mid-20th century. This contemporary example combines tradition and modernity, with softer pastel-coloured silk and knot stitches at the centres of the flowers reflecting French colonial influence.\n\r\nDesigned by Victoria Roe (b. 1977), the ensemble demonstrates how traditional Vietnamese silk and embroidery can be reinterpreted through contemporary fashion, bringing together regional textile traditions and modern design.\n","physicalDescription":"Woman's jacket and skirt ensemble, made of black satin weave silk, called 'Lanh my A', literally 'lacquer silk' in southern Vietnam.
