By about 1900 it was even fashionable to wear them in the morning, a change in taste encouraged by the flow of stones from South Africa which began in the late 1860s.\r\n\r\nThe shamrock, particularly the four-leaved version, was a good luck charm. In 1897,  Vogue magazine's round up of gifts included 'Shamrock scarf pins and watch charms, when the genuine leaf is inserted most particularly, are prized for their luck bringing and are now in greatly in favor with youths and maidens.'
