It included over 13,000 exhibits and was the first international exhibition of manufactured products.\r\n\r\nThe exhibition attracted more than six million visitors, equivalent to a third of the population of Great Britain. This watercolour is from a group of images reproduced as colour lithographs in Recollections of the Great Exhibition, a lavish contemporary souvenir guide. The profits from the Great Exhibition were used to fund several science and art initiatives in South Kensington. They included what is now the Victoria and Albert Museum, whose earliest surviving building was erected in 1857.\r\n\r\nThis watercolour shows the stand for Garrett and Sons.","physicalDescription":"Watercolour drawing","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Dolby, Edwin Thomas","id":"A19410"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper (fiber product)","id":"AAT14109"},{"text":"gouache","id":"AAT70114"},{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"}],"techniques":[{"text":"watercolour painting (technique)","id":"THES250889"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Watercolour and bodycolour over pencil on paper","categories":[],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2023NP7963"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLH","id":"THES49654"},"free":"","case":"WD","shelf":"215","box":"B"}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"watercolour","id":"AAT78925"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1851","earliest":"1851-01-01","latest":"1851-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[{"object":{"text":"19538:25","id":"O79394"},"association":""}],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"283","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"watercolour","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"382","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"watercolour","note":""},{"dimension":"Height","value":"365","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"support board","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"460","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"support board","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Watercolour, Interior view of the Great Exhibition of 1851, The Stand for Garrett and Sons, Leiston Works, by Edwin Dolby, 1851","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Julius Bryant, ed.
