She is one of the Jameel Prize 5 designers. Kaikswo launched her own sustainable womenswear label in 2016. She re-appropriates work wear and traditional garments, treating the designs like sculptures that move around the bodies that wear them. Her sources of inspiration are diverse – dating from antiquity to our own time, and ranging from Japanese rural workwear to the clothes worn by nomadic Berbers in North Africa. Kaiksow’s textiles are hand-woven in Bahrain. She has forged an ongoing collaboration with local makers in a conscious attempt to revive artisanal practices and support the island’s craft economy. Kaiksow also experiments with ‘upcycling’ – the creative re-use of discarded fabrics. \n\nThe Lubni shirt is made out of cotton that has been created in a small mill in Japan. It is inspired by spinners’ shirts from the nineteenth century, in particular from paintings created by the artist Alber Anker. The overall look of the Kumhi dress takes its inspiration both from a garment from the late 80s that had been put together with some ties, as well as a statue at the Bahrain History Museum. The garment has been pin-pleated to create volume and is tied together on the shoulder. Both pieces are part of the Al-Kimiya Collection (Spring Summer 2018). The collection was inspired by the notion of protection, namely a woman seeking her own protection through soft armour.
