The designer had been exploring the potential of PVC for rainwear since 1963 and in 1965 developed a successful range for the manufacturer Alligator, based in Stockport. This bag therefore combines two of Quant’s design traits of the mid-1960s and is also an effective way of demonstrating Quant’s early expansion through licensing deals with manufacturers of different products. These licensing agreements enabled her to provide a ‘top to toe’ coordinated look for her customers and provided a sound financial basis for the expansion of the Mary Quant brand.\r\n\r\nThe bag range was promoted in an article ‘Co-ordinated Quant’ published in Petticoat magazine, 7 May 1966, which included details about the new Mary Quant cosmetics range.","physicalDescription":"Handbag, black and white PVC","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Mary Quant","id":"A2349"},"association":{"text":"designer","id":"x36960"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Mary Quant","id":"AUTH350850"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""},{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"PVC","id":"AAT14513"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"PVC","categories":[{"text":"Bags","id":"THES284620"},{"text":"Plastic","id":"THES49026"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&F","id":"THES48601"},"images":["2024NR5478","2024NR5479"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES404263"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Handbag","id":"AAT46219"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"London","id":"x28980"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1966","earliest":"1966-01-01","latest":"1966-12-31"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with the assistance of the Elspeth Evans Bequest","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Length","value":"39.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"27.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Handbag, black and white PVC, designed by Mary Quant, Bagcraft, England, 1966","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Image reference: \r\nDian Poore modelling the Mary Quant handbag range, 1966 © Punch Cartoon Library / TopFoto"}],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"[Mary Quant exhibition, 2019]\r\n\r\nHANDBAGS BY QUANT – THEY’RE QUAINT\r\n1966\r\n\r\nAn exclusive range of small PVC handbags, produced for Bagcraft in 1966, completed the overall Mary Quant-PVC look.
