Two variants of the cherub musical brooches, containing mechanisms by Reuge of Sainte-Croix in Switzerland, are known - this style and one with floral ornament. This brooch, which when wound up plays 'La Vie en Rose', was acquired by its original owner in 1952 or 1953. ","physicalDescription":"Two cherubs hover above a rectangular box of gilt metal which contains a musical mechanism  that plays 'La Vie en Rose' and is set with a large oval cabochon of purple glass surrounded by eight imitation pearls. The cherubs hold between them an imitation baroque pearl from which descends a short connecting length of flattened chain. Made in two halves, the box's front and back have a surface patterning of fine lines with alternating stars and dots, and are held together with a screw on the bottom edge. At the back is a winder to start the mechanism and a push button to stop it.\n","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Mitchel Maer","id":"A38570"},"association":{"text":"designed and made by","id":"x28674"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[{"name":{"text":"Christian Dior","id":"A4421"},"association":{"text":"designed for","id":"x41471"},"note":""}],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"gilt metal","id":"x35080"},{"text":"glass","id":"AAT10797"}],"techniques":[{"text":"gilding","id":"AAT53789"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Gilt metal, glass and imitation  pearls, with a musical mechanism","categories":[{"text":"Jewellery","id":"THES48930"},{"text":"Metalwork","id":"THES48920"},{"text":"Music","id":"THES253065"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"MET","id":"THES48599"},"images":["2021NA7852","2021NA7853"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"009","id":"THES412317"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Brooch","id":"AAT45995"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United Kingdom","id":"x29336"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Switzerland","id":"x29199"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":"musical mechanism within"}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1952-3","earliest":"1952-01-01","latest":"1953-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Leona Bannar-Martin in memory of her mother Marguerite Kitson","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"63","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"52","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Depth","value":"25","unit":"mm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"Christian Dior by Mitchel Maer\r\nREUGE STE-CROIX","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Musical brooch of gilt metal, glass and imitation pearls, Christian Dior by Mitchel Maer, England, 1952-3","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["M.36-2018"],"accessionNumberNum":"36","accessionNumberPrefix":"M","accessionYear":2018,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2026-04-01","recordCreationDate":"2018-11-16","availableToBook":true}}
