In 2016, the results of June's EU Referendum - in which 52% of voters backed a 'Leave' result and 48% voted to 'Remain' - provided plenty of material for pantomime jokes. This costume, designed by Lotte Collett for 2016 Hackney Empire pantomime <i>Sleeping Beauty</i>, provides some commentary on the results. The headdress references the fact that the majority of voters in Northern Ireland, Scotland, and London voted to remain, whilst the majority of Leave voters lived in England and Wales. Often parodying topical news stories and events, its Christmas seasonality makes it a living newspaper of the year. In Hackney Empire’s 2016 production of Sleeping Beauty, one of the Dame’s costumes referenced the EU referendum.
