On the right is a corner of the Palace of Alin Aq (now almost destroyed); next, the Mosque and Tomb of Amir Khayrbak; behind this, the Mosque of Aqsunqur, also known as the Blue Mosque or the Mosque of Ibrahim Agha. It is an excellent example of Marilhat's sensitive use of his chosen media - pencil and red chalk - not only to render precisely each architectural detail but also to convey the contrasts of light and shade, and to suggest the hot, dusty atmosphere of the Cairo street. \r\n\r\nMarilhat travelled in the Near East with the botanist and traveller Baron Karl von Hugel in 1831-32, and stayed on in Egypt for a further year making topographical studies, such as the one shown here, as well as portraits of notable people, including Muhammad Ali, Viceroy of Egypt. After his return to France he exhibited Orientalist paintings for ten years. These won great critical acclaim, and many engravings and lithographs after his work were published.","physicalDescription":"Drawing.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Marilhat, Prosper Georges Antoine","id":"A21437"},"association":{"text":"artist","id":"AAT25103"},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"Pencil and red chalk","categories":[{"text":"Drawings","id":"THES48966"},{"text":"Topography","id":"THES252988"},{"text":"Historic Cairo","id":"THES273264"}],"styles":[{"text":"French School","id":"x31263"},{"text":"Orientalism","id":"x31272"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"PDP","id":"THES48595"},"images":["2008BV6256"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"LVLD (VA)","id":"THES49658"},"free":"","case":"SCX","shelf":"1","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"drawing","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Egypt","id":"x29512"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Aqsunqur Mosque","id":"x41871"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Funerary Complex of Amir Khayrbak","id":"x41869"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""},{"place":{"text":"Cairo","id":"x28776"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1831-1832","earliest":"1831-01-01","latest":"1832-12-31"},"association":{"text":"drawn","id":"x30545"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Purchased with the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, Art Fund, Shell International and the Friends of the V&A","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"47.4","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"32.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[{"content":"","inscriber":{"name":{"text":"","id":""},"association":{"text":"","id":""}},"date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"description":"","interpretation":"","language":"","medium":"","method":"","position":"","script":"","translation":"شارع باب الوزير","transliteration":"","type":"","note":""}],"objectHistory":"According to Rodney Searight: - `The Fine Art Society, 1978.'","historicalContext":"The drawing represents a view looking north along part of the Darb al-Ahmar (now Sharia Bab al-Wazir).
