He designed Olivier’s films <i>Henry V</i> (1944), <i>Hamlet</i> (1948) and <i>Richard III</i> (1955). <i>Hamlet</i> was filmed in black and white, so the use of different tones and textures in the costumes helped absorb or reflect light.
