Loosely based on the life of the celebrated American burlesque artiste and stripper, Gypsy Rose Lee, (born Rose Louise Hovick (1911-1970)), it was an instant success and ran for 702 performers. It is now regarded as one of the most important musicals of the 20th century.\r\n\r\nIn the 1959 production the leading role of Louise was played by Sandra Church. Louise and her sister June begin the musical as two young performers in a song and dance act. They are dominated by their formidable mother, Rose, the epitome of the ambitious showbiz parent. June runs away to start a new life but Momma Rose continues to promote Louise’s career on the declining vaudeville circuit. When Rose volunteers her daughter as a replacement in a strip-tease act, a star is born. Louise’s performances become bolder and more revealing, she achieves fame under the stage name, Gypsy Rose Lee, and no longer needs her mother.\r\n\r\nThis strip tease costume was hand sewn by the real Gypsy Rose Lee, who was an advisor on the 1959 production.\r\n","physicalDescription":"","artistMakerPerson":[],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"cotton (textile)","id":"AAT14067"},{"text":"lace","id":"x40681"}],"techniques":[],"materialsAndTechniques":"","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"},{"text":"Underwear","id":"THES48880"},{"text":"Musical Theatre","id":"THES278879"},{"text":"Theatre costume","id":"THES268477"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2019MH0294"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"001","id":"THES343338"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Underwear","id":"AAT209267"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"Yes-general","note":"Term 'gypsy'"}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"United States","id":"x29333"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"1959","earliest":"1959-01-01","latest":"1959-12-31"},"association":{"text":"designed","id":"x29338"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"Given by Sandra Church","dimensions":[],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Underwear worn by Sandra Church in the musical <i>Gypsy</i>, Broadway Theatre, New York, 1959","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[],"partNumbers":["S.557-2018"],"accessionNumberNum":"557","accessionNumberPrefix":"S","accessionYear":2018,"otherNumbers":[],"copyNumber":"","aspects":["WHOLE"],"assets":[],"recordModificationDate":"2025-04-17","recordCreationDate":"2018-11-07","availableToBook":true}}
