She is known internationally for her activist art in support of justice and equality for farmworkers and her representations of Latina women. In 1974 Hernandez joined Las Mujeres Muralistas, San Francisco’s first all-Latina mural collective who produced large-scale works depicting the social concerns and everyday life of the Mexican community. Often working in screenprint, a medium suited to her bold use of graphics and colour, she is recognised as making a major contribution to the beginnings of Chicana/Latina feminist art. \r\n\r\nUnfair labour practices have been a key issue for Chicanos and Mexican immigrants in America and the formation of the United Farmworkers of America (UFWA) was critical in the development and identity of the Chicano movement. Born into a family of farmworkers in Dinuba a rural town in California’s San Joaquim valley, Hernandez became involved with the UFWA, feeling a responsibility to use her art to speak up for those that who could not speak up for themselves. ‘California Special’ is part of this body of work.
