It embodies the qualities of beauty extolled by proponents of the Mingei, or Japanese Folk Craft movement. These qualities are seen to derive from an object having being made by craftsmen working close to nature with traditional styles and simple techniques, and living within a small and harmonious community without concern for capitalistic gain and the assertion of individuality.","physicalDescription":"Large jar with bluish-white and olive-brown glazes","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"Stoneware","id":"x30197"}],"techniques":[{"text":"glazed","id":"AAT53914"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Stoneware with bluish-white and olive-brown glazes","categories":[{"text":"Ceramics","id":"THES48982"},{"text":"Stoneware","id":"THES48890"}],"styles":[{"text":"Edo","id":"AAT106643"},{"text":"Meiji","id":"AAT18567"}],"collectionCode":{"text":"EAS","id":"THES48596"},"images":["2006AF4260","2006BE6488"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"145 (VA)","id":"THES49865"},"free":"","case":"52","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"Jar","id":""}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Sendai","id":"x44277"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"19th century","earliest":"1800-01-01","latest":"1900-12-31"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"61.8","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Diameter","value":"53.0","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"maximum","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"Purchased from the collection of David and Anne Hale, residents in Sendai, northeastern Japan, from 1966 to 1972","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Jar, glazed stoneware, Japan, Tsutsumi kilns, 19th century","bibliographicReferences":[{"reference":{"text":"","id":""},"details":"","free":"Liefkes, Reino and Hilary Young, eds. <u>Masterpieces of World Ceramics.</u>.
