This contract is for the employment of Lily Tuplin in the title role; Tuplin was a popular music hall actress and singer, who had been performing on stage since the age of eight. Her performance in the production was described in reviews from The Era newspaper as “…a graceful Cinderella, whose skirt dancing is much admired”. As in contemporary pantomime, 19th century pantomime incorporated current fads and trends, such as this skirt dancing routine.\r\n\r\nThe production also included a celebrity cameo in the person of Lillie Langtry. She played the role of Fairy Diamond, Cinderella’s bestower of wishes. Langtry was a highly successful actress in this country and the USA, and would have been a big draw to this production.\r\n\r\nAlthough the costumes for this production were claimed to be designed by Mrs Revill, the manager’s wife, this contract specifies that Miss Tuplin will supply her own ‘boots, tights, wigs and dresses’.","physicalDescription":"Printed contract with manuscript regarding arrangements for Lilly Tuplin playing the role of Cinderella, in the Theatre Royal Leicester's 1894 pantomime.","artistMakerPerson":[{"name":{"text":"Unknown","id":"A1848"},"association":{"text":"","id":""},"note":""}],"artistMakerOrganisations":[],"artistMakerPeople":[],"materials":[{"text":"paper","id":"x30308"},{"text":"ink","id":"AAT15012"}],"techniques":[{"text":"letterpress","id":"AAT178926"},{"text":"manuscript","id":"AAT252927"},{"text":"wood-cutting","id":"AAT53296"}],"materialsAndTechniques":"Letterpress and woodcut print, with manuscript on paper","categories":[{"text":"Entertainment & Leisure","id":"THES48959"}],"styles":[],"collectionCode":{"text":"T&P","id":"THES48602"},"images":["2009BY0146"],"imageResolution":"high","galleryLocations":[{"current":{"text":"002","id":"THES356694"},"free":"","case":"","shelf":"","box":""}],"partTypes":[[{"text":"contracts","id":"AAT27649"}]],"contentWarnings":[{"apprise":"","note":""}],"placesOfOrigin":[{"place":{"text":"Great Britain","id":"x32019"},"association":{"text":"made","id":"x28654"},"note":""}],"productionDates":[{"date":{"text":"17 March 1894","earliest":"1894-03-17","latest":"1894-03-17"},"association":{"text":"signing","id":"AAT189326"},"note":""}],"associatedObjects":[],"creditLine":"","dimensions":[{"dimension":"Height","value":"33.5","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""},{"dimension":"Width","value":"21.25","unit":"cm","qualifier":"","date":{"text":"","earliest":null,"latest":null},"part":"","note":""}],"dimensionsNote":"","marksAndInscriptions":[],"objectHistory":"","historicalContext":"","briefDescription":"Contract between Wallace Revill, proprietor of the Theatre Royal, Leicester, and Lily Tuplin, who is engaged to play Cinderella.","bibliographicReferences":[],"production":"","productionType":{"text":"","id":""},"contentDescription":"","contentPlaces":[],"associatedPlaces":[],"contentPerson":[{"text":"Tuplin, Lily","id":"N7915"}],"associatedPerson":[],"contentOrganisations":[],"associatedOrganisations":[],"contentPeople":[],"associatedPeople":[],"contentEvents":[],"associatedEvents":[],"contentOthers":[],"contentConcepts":[],"contentLiteraryRefs":[],"galleryLabels":[{"text":"Actor’s contract\r\n1894\r\n\r\nThis contract is for Lily Tuplin to play Cinderella at the Theatre Royal Leicester.
